Edinburgh

Edinburgh is described by King Charles as one of the world’s most beautiful cities and was recently voted one of the top ten cities in the world by Expedia.

The city’s backdrop of Arthur’s Seat, the Pentland Hills and Edinburgh’s waterfront makes it a unique visitor destination. In just one day, you can explore the city’s exciting new waterfront development, browse the shops and restaurants on the Royal Mile, visit the famous castle, and hike the rugged terrain of the volcanic Arthur’s Seat.

The Christmas market is a must-visit, offering a delightful array of crafts, gifts, and delicious treats. The city buzzes with seasonal events and celebrations, creating an enchanting, heartwarming atmosphere.

Accommodation in Edinburgh

You can choose to book hotels with Steam Dreams or independently. All passengers who book accommodation with Steam Dreams will enjoy the benefit of a dedicated representative at each hotel, as well as a luggage courier service transporting suitcases directly from the station to hotel rooms. Hotel accommodation is booked on a bed and breakfast basis.

Pullman Dining passengers will stay at The Scotsman, one of Edinburgh’s finest hotels or at The Caledonian Hotel, a 5-star hotel in the heart of the city’s historic centre (pictured). First Class passengers will stay at the stylish 4-star Hilton Carlton Hotel, just a two-minute walk from Edinburgh Waverley station. Premium Standard passengers will stay at a centrally located Premier Inn or similar.

ITINERARY

Day 1 - London to Edinburgh - 27/11/2025

Our journey begins at London Kings Cross station, where our liveried steward welcomes you aboard the sumptuous vintage carriages. We set off on our enchanting long weekend tour, following the historic Flying Scotsman route from London Kings Cross along the East Coast Main Line to York, where our steam locomotive joins us.  North of York, we will pass through beautiful countryside with stunning views, including Durham Cathedral, the Angel of the North, the Tyne Bridges, Holy Island, and the Border Bridge as the sun begins to set.

Day 1 - London to Edinburgh

Day 2 - In Edinburgh - 28/11/2025

Immerse yourself in the spirit of the season and uncover Edinburgh’s unique charm. The city’s winter events transform its centre into a Christmas wonderland, with natural scenery and architectural landmarks aglow with festive magic.

The Christmas Market on Princes Street will feature around 70 stalls, showcasing some of the best local and international producers selling everything from handmade gifts and bespoke products to tasty treats and delicious drinks. In the Princes Street Gardens, the Ross Bandstand plays host to programme of live events, including choir performances and a Light Night Concert – a festive event that traditionally marks the start of the city’s Christmas celebrations. At Edinburgh Castle, a spectacular light show returns, with immersive displays, interactive installations, music and wonder.

Day 2 - In Edinburgh

Day 3 - Forth Bridge Lunchtime Tour - 29/11/2025

Enjoy another day at leisure in Edinburgh to explore the city’s many attractions, or discover the beauty of the region by steam on our Forth Bridge Lunchtime Tour.

This rare and scenic tour departs from Edinburgh Waverley mid-morning and travels over the towering structure of the Forth Bridge, offering striking views across to the road bridge and out to sea. We then head in to Fife and make our way along the coast towards Kirkcaldy, passing the castle and beach at Aberdour, and the beaches at Burntisland and Kinghorn, before turning back inland via Dunfermline.

The train continues along the Forth Estuary onto a rarely used goods only line which offers stunning views. We then pass through Alloa and along the reopened route to Stirling, looping round the Western end of the estuary. Having crossed the River Forth at Stirling, we head south through Falkirk before arriving back at Edinburgh Waverley.

Day 3 - Forth Bridge Lunchtime Tour

Day 4 - Edinburgh to London - 30/11/2025

Our homeward journey carries us through the Pentland Hills and across the Lowlands to the Lowther Hills, following the route once known as the Caledonian Main Line. Our steam locomotive will be put through her paces as we scale several summits en route to the English border.

At Carlisle, we bid farewell to our steam locomotive and continue south, hauled by a vintage diesel or electric engine, to London Kings Cross.

As we traverse the Lune Gorge and Eden Valley, passing the rolling peaks and picturesque villages of Cumbria, take a moment to reflect on your time in Scotland’s majestic capital. We arrive at London King’s Cross just after the evening rush hour.

A sumptuous culinary experience aboard lovingly restored vintage carriages, adorned with polished brass and fine woodwork.

On Day 1, a full English breakfast, mid morning pastries and a multi-course seasonal evening meal – accompanied by half a bottle of wine per person – will be served during your journey to Edinburgh. On Day 4, during our return to London, a light lunch will be served, followed later in the journey by a multi-course Scottish themed dinner, again accompanied by half a bottle of wine per person.

Premium Standard offers a nostalgic and authentic journey onboard a beautifully restored carriage that embodies the charm of a bygone era, with its classic decor and comfortable seating around tables for four.

Scheduled locomotive

Blue Peter

60532

No. 60532 “Blue Peter”, the last remaining L.N.E.R. Class A2 Pacific, was designed by Arthur H. Peppercorn. She was one of fifteen locomotives in her class, entering service in 1948 just weeks after the amalgamation of the Big Four railway companies into the newly nationalised British Railways.

One of the most powerful express locomotives ever built in the UK, “Blue Peter” was named after the winner of the 1939 Derby race. She was initially based at York, hauling express passenger services on the East Coast Main Line before being transferred to Aberdeen in 1950. In 1951, “Blue Peter” achieved 100 mph (161 km/h) during a trial run between Stonehaven and Montrose with the Aberdonian. It was finally withdrawn in 1966.

In 1998, 60532 ran an Edinburgh to London excursion to mark the 40th anniversary of the Blue Peter TV programme. In 2014, “Blue Peter” was purchased by Royal Scot Locomotive and General Trust, where it received an extensive eight-year overhaul, and returned to passenger service in Autumn 2024.

Whilst this locomotive is rostered for the steam hauled sections of the trip listed, it cannot be guaranteed and may be substituted for a different engine.
