This unique tour offers a fascinating steam-hauled adventure across England, travelling through a rich tapestry of rivers, canals and rolling countryside to the captivating city of Chester, where ancient history and modern life sit side by side. The city’s Tudor and Victorian heart is justifiably renowned as one of Britain’s most picturesque city centres.

 

Your journey unfolds through glorious countryside, a tapestry of winding rivers, peaceful canals and open fields before arriving in Chester.

Renowned for its unique black-and-white Rows, magnificent cathedral, independent shops and rich Roman heritage, Chester offers much to discover, all within easy reach of the station.

After a delightful break, to enjoy the city at your leisure, return to the station to be  welcomed back on board for the return journey.

This journey will be steam-hauled between West London and Chester on the outward journey.

Chester

Chester’s Tudor and Victorian heart is justifiably recognised as one of Britain’s most handsome city centres. This collection of black-and-white timber-framed buildings and red sandstone architecture, surrounded by an original set of Roman-era walls, is one of the North West’s most celebrated attractions.

The original walls of this historic city were built by the Romans and today provide a two-mile walkway around Chester, punctuated by ancient towers and gates. The city boasts the most complete Roman city walls in Britain, the country’s oldest racecourse, and a 1,000-year-old cathedral, home to some of Europe’s finest medieval carvings. Another of Chester’s unique attractions is its 700-year-old Rows, a series of two-tier galleried arcades offering an array of independent shops and boutiques.

Inspired by the regions we steam through, our menus are crafted using the finest locally sourced, seasonal ingredients.

Guests are seated in plush armchair-style seats at elegantly dressed tables for two or four, adorned with crisp white linens, fine china, sparkling glassware, fresh flowers, and plump cushions – evoking the grandeur of a more refined era.

On a full-day journey, guests will be welcomed on board with a chilled Champagne Bellini, followed by a multi-course breakfast. On the return journey, they are greeted with a glass of Champagne and canapés followed by a four-course evening meal, complemented by half a bottle of wine per person.

A sanctuary for those seeking a refined, leisurely experience without formal on-board dining. First Class offers an unparalleled journey into the past aboard elegantly restored carriages, with spacious, cushioned seating arranged around tables for two or four.

Experience classic travel in our First Class carriages, where vintage charm meets modern comfort. Elegant interiors, attentive service and picture windows framing picturesque landscapes make every moment a memory to treasure.

First Class allows guests to bring their own picnic while enjoying complimentary tea and coffee, and a welcome celebratory drink served by our stewards.

Additional drinks and snacks may be purchased to enjoy at your seat, or you can add a traditional Afternoon Tea to your booking (supplement applies) for a touch of indulgence.
