Embark on a journey to Portsmouth, one of Britain’s most historic waterfront cities. Renowned for its rich naval heritage, bustling harbour and world-famous Historic Dockyard, this vibrant South Coast destination combines centuries of maritime history with a lively waterfront atmosphere, offering a fascinating blend of heritage, culture and coastal charm.

Having been welcomed on board by your liveried steward, our train will make its way westwards through the countryside of Essex and across the Capital to West London, where we will be joined by our steam locomotive. From here, sit back and relax as we travel through the English countryside, passing rolling landscapes and market towns on our way to the south coast.

Enjoy several hours in Portsmouth, where you may choose to explore the city’s maritime attractions or indulge in some retail therapy at Gunwharf Quays. We welcome you back on board the train in the late afternoon for the return journey home.

This trip will be steam-hauled between West London to Portsmouth in both directions.

Portsmouth is one of Britain’s most historic waterfront cities, where a rich maritime heritage sits alongside a vibrant modern harbour. Home to centuries of naval history, the city boasts an impressive collection of attractions centred around its famous Historic Dockyard, making it one of the South Coast’s most celebrated destinations.

The city’s seafront and harbour have played a pivotal role in Britain’s naval story for hundreds of years. Visitors can explore world-renowned attractions including HMS Victory, HMS Warrior and the Mary Rose Museum, home to the remarkably preserved Tudor warship recovered from the Solent. Beyond its maritime treasures, Portsmouth offers a lively mix of independent shops, waterside restaurants and historic streets, while the striking Spinnaker Tower provides spectacular panoramic views across the city, harbour and coastline.

Inspired by the regions we steam through, our menus are crafted using the finest locally sourced, seasonal ingredients.

Guests are seated in plush armchair-style seats at elegantly dressed tables for two or four, adorned with crisp white linens, fine china, sparkling glassware, fresh flowers, and plump cushions – evoking the grandeur of a more refined era.

On a full-day journey, guests will be welcomed on board with a chilled Champagne Bellini, followed by a multi-course breakfast. On the return journey, they are greeted with a glass of Champagne and canapés followed by a four-course evening meal, complemented by half a bottle of wine per person.

A sanctuary for those seeking a refined, leisurely experience without formal on-board dining. First Class offers an unparalleled journey into the past aboard elegantly restored carriages, with spacious, cushioned seating arranged around tables for two or four.

Experience classic travel in our First Class carriages, where vintage charm meets modern comfort. Elegant interiors, attentive service and picture windows framing picturesque landscapes make every moment a memory to treasure.

First Class allows guests to bring their own picnic while enjoying complimentary tea and coffee, and a welcome celebratory drink served by our stewards.

Additional drinks and snacks may be purchased to enjoy at your seat, or you can add a traditional Afternoon Tea to your booking (supplement applies) for a touch of indulgence.
