Enjoy three magical nights and two full days exploring Northumberland’s finest treasures. There will also be the opportunity to enjoy a nostalgic steam railway journey, complete with lunch served on board. Each evening, return to your chosen hotel in either Alnwick or Matfen, carefully selected for its comfort, character and warm hospitality.

This remarkable region has inspired travellers for generations. Its rich blend of rolling countryside, historic market towns, ancient heritage and coastal beauty offers something to discover at every turn, while its tranquil surroundings provide a welcome escape from the pace of everyday life.

Your holiday is based in either Alnwick or Matfen, both ideally located for experiencing the very best of the county. Alnwick is renowned for its impressive castle, beautiful gardens and vibrant town centre, while Matfen offers an elegant rural retreat amidst the rolling Northumbrian countryside. Alternatively, you may choose to arrange your own accommodation independently.

During your stay, you may explore at your own pace or join a selection of organised excursions (supplement applies), showcasing some of Northumberland’s finest sights and heritage. These include the opportunity to enjoy a nostalgic steam railway journey with lunch served on board. Details of the optional excursions will be announced in early 2027.

 

Accommodation in Northumberland

Pullman Dining passengers will stay on a bed and breakfast basis, with dinner included at their hotel on nights two and three. Accommodation is provided at one of Northumberland’s distinguished hotels: Matfen Hall, a magnificent five-star country house estate set within 300 acres of picturesque parkland, combining historic grandeur with contemporary luxury. A limited selection of upgraded room categories is also available for a supplement (double occupancy only).

Alternatively, guests may stay at The Bailiffgate Hotel, a refined boutique property occupying a sensitively restored historic building in the heart of Alnwick. Blending period character with contemporary style, it is ideally located just a short stroll from Alnwick Castle, The Alnwick Garden and the town’s charming historic centre.

First Class passengers will stay at The Cookie Jar on a bed and breakfast basis. This award-winning boutique hotel, housed within a beautifully restored former convent in the heart of Alnwick, offers characterful accommodation and a warm welcome. Conveniently located close to Alnwick Castle and The Alnwick Garden, it provides an excellent base for exploring the county.

Alternatively, guests may choose to arrange their own accommodation independently.

 

JOURNEY

ITINERARY


Day 1 - London to Northumberland - 21/09/2027

Your holiday begins at London Kings Cross, where you will be welcomed aboard by your liveried steward before settling into your seat in beautifully restored heritage carriages. Behind one of our magnificent steam locomotives, you will embark on a memorable journey to Northumberland, experiencing the romance and nostalgia of main line steam travel.

As we travel through the heart of England, relax and enjoy the sights, sounds and unmistakable atmosphere of steam at its most evocative. Midway through the day, we pause for a leisurely break in the historic city of York, allowing time to explore its medieval streets, independent shops and magnificent Minster.

Rejoining the train, we continue our journey through Yorkshire and County Durham before crossing into Northumberland. Along the way, a succession of iconic landmarks comes into view, from the soaring towers of York Minster and Durham Cathedral to the unmistakable Angel of the North.

Arriving in Morpeth during the evening, guests will then travel to their chosen hotel for a three-night stay, enjoying warm Northumbrian hospitality throughout.

Day 1 - London to Northumberland

Days 2 & 3 – Discovering Northumberland's Finest Treasures - 22/09/2027

With two full days to explore one of England’s most captivating counties, guests are invited to relax and immerse themselves in Northumberland’s rich blend of history, heritage and natural beauty.

Optional excursions (supplement applies) on Days 2 and 3 offer the opportunity to discover some of the region’s most celebrated attractions, including magnificent castles, beautiful gardens, charming market towns and spectacular coastal and countryside scenery. There will also be the opportunity to enjoy a nostalgic circular steam railway journey, complete with lunch served on board. Details of the optional excursions will be announced in early 2027.

Whether exploring independently or joining one of our carefully curated excursions, these days provide the perfect opportunity to experience the unique character and charm of England’s northern frontier.

 

 

Days 2 & 3 – Discovering Northumberland's Finest Treasures

Day 4 – Northumberland - London - 24/09/2027

After breakfast, we rejoin our train at Morpeth for the homeward journey. Our steam locomotive once again takes centre stage as we travel through the beautiful Tyne Valley towards Carlisle, passing rolling countryside, historic settlements and some of northern England’s most celebrated scenery.

At Carlisle, our steam-hauled section draws to a close as a vintage diesel locomotive takes over for the journey south along the world-famous Settle & Carlisle Railway, widely regarded as one of Britain’s most spectacular rail routes. Crossing dramatic viaducts and traversing the remote uplands of the Yorkshire Dales, this remarkable line provides a fittingly scenic finale to your holiday.

As the miles pass by, take time to reflect on the memorable experiences of the past few days while enjoying the comfort and elegance of your heritage surroundings. We arrive back at London Kings Cross in the evening, bringing an unforgettable Northumberland escape to a memorable close.

Enjoy a sumptuous culinary experience aboard lovingly restored vintage carriages, adorned with polished brass, fine woodwork, and the timeless elegance of Pullman Dining.

A multi-course seasonal menu will be served on days 1 and 4 of your journey, accompanied by half a bottle of wine per person. On days 2 and 3, guests will enjoy evening meals in their hotel, offering a chance to unwind in a relaxed setting.

First Class offers an inviting journey into the past aboard beautifully restored carriages, with spacious seating arranged around tables for two or four guests.

Perfect for those seeking a relaxed and refined travel experience without the formality of on-board dining, guests are welcomed with a glass of fizz, along with freshly brewed tea and coffee. Additional drinks and light refreshments are available to purchase throughout the journey, or guests may bring their own picnic. For an added touch of indulgence, a traditional Afternoon Tea may be pre-booked for a supplement.
