Our story

Born from a passion for steam trains, The Steam Dreams Rail Co. was conceived by steam train enthusiast Marcus Robertson, whose mother wrote The Wombles. His ambition to revive the era of luxury steam travel came to life on 16th December 1999, when over 150 passengers boarded a train at Waterloo Station for a day trip to Salisbury.

Since that inaugural journey, The Steam Dreams Rail Co. has flourished, now welcoming thousands of passengers annually on day trips and circular tours. In addition to these popular excursions, Steam Dreams offers UK steam holidays to destinations such as Edinburgh, Wales, and the Lake District.

In December 2018, The Steam Dreams Rail Co. was acquired by locomotive owner David Buck. With his passion for steam travel and ownership of one of the UK’s most recognisable locomotives, Mayflower, David infused new energy into the business, introducing exciting plans including regular summer itineraries under the umbrella name: “Steam Express”.

A new chapter began in June 2022 when the company was acquired by Locomotive Services Group (LSG). With extensive experience and knowledge in the railway industry, LSG brought a wealth of resources, including a large stable of locomotives, drivers, and beautifully appointed carriages. For over 25 years, we’ve been crafting unforgettable rail journeys and holidays, seamlessly blending the nostalgia of steam travel with vintage carriages, breathtaking scenery, captivating destinations, exquisite cuisine, and luxurious hotels.
