Travel along one of the most scenic railway lines in England and enjoy a day filled with pure nostalgia. From the moment your vintage train chugs into the platform, to sinking into your comfortable seat, all of life’s stresses and strains will melt away as we travel mile after mile through picturesque British countryside with stunning coastal views on our way to the English Riviera.

Leaving London behind we begin our journey hauled by vintage diesel before picking up our steam locomotive in Taunton. From here the panoramic views unfold beyond the window as we run along the estuary of the Exe River. Sweeping round the mouth of the river, we run along the seashore for mile after mile before joining the Paignton & Dartmouth Steam Railway where our steam locomotive will be put through its paces as she climbs high above the Devon hills before descending into the Dart Estuary at Kingswear.

Scheduled locomotive

Nunney Castle

5029

Built at Swindon Works in 1934, 5029 is a Great Western Railway Castle Class locomotive named after a small castle near Frome, Somerset. Nunney Castle was allocated to Old Oak Common Shed in West London, where it spent most of its working life.

The success of the Castle Class locomotives was such that they continued to be produced under British Railways after nationalisation in 1948. During the first day of the evacuation of civilians during World War II, the locomotive hauled trains carrying children from London to the safety of the countryside. Post-war, Nunney Castle also had the honour of pulling the Royal Train in October 1957 from London Paddington to Gloucester. Withdrawn in 1963, Nunney Castle was sent to the famous Barry Scrapyard, from where 213 steam locomotives were rescued.  While limited today to 75 mph, the locomotive is capable of speeds up to 100 mph.

Nunney Castle enjoyed periods of mainline activity up until 2015 and will return to mainline service in 2025, following an extensive overhaul.

Whilst this locomotive is rostered for the steam hauled sections of the trip listed, it cannot be guaranteed and may be substituted for a different engine.
