Set off on an enchanting weekend tour following the historic Flying Scotsman route from London Kings Cross along the East Coast Main Line to the legendary city of Edinburgh.  North of York we will pass through some beautiful countryside with stunning views including Durham Cathedral, the Angel of the North, the Tyne Bridges, Holy Island, the Border Bridge and miles of Scottish Coastline.

Over three nights, immerse yourself in the spirit of the season and uncover the city’s unique charm. Edinburgh’s winter events transform the magnificent city centre into a Christmas wonderland, with its natural sights and architectural wonders aglow with festive magic.

Edinburgh is descibed by Prince Charles as one of the Worlds most beautiful cities and was recently voted one of the top ten cities in the World by Expedia.

The city’s backdrop of Arthur’s Seat, the Pentland Hills and Edinburgh’s Waterfront make the city a unique visitor destination. In just one day you can explore the city’s exciting new waterfront development, explore the shops and restaurants on the Royal Mile, visit the famous castle and explore the rugged terrain of the volcanic Arthur’s Seat.

The Christmas market is a must-visit, offering a delightful array of crafts, gifts, and delicious treats. The city buzzes with seasonal events and celebrations, creating an enchanting, heartwarming atmosphere.

Accommodation in Edinburgh

You can choose to book hotels with Steam Dreams or independently. All passengers who book accommodation with Steam Dreams will enjoy the benefit of a dedicated representative for each hotel as well as a luggage courier service transporting all suitcases directly from the station to hotel rooms. Hotel accommodation is booked on a bed and breakfast basis.

Pullman Dining passengers will stay at The Scotsman, one of Edinburgh’s finest hotels or The Caledonian Hotel, a 5-star hotel in the heart of Edinburgh’s historic city centre (pictured). First Class passengers will stay at the stylish 4-star Hilton Carlton Hotel, just a two-minute walk from Edinburgh Waverley station. Premium Standard passengers will stay at a centrally located Premier Inn or similar.

ITINERARY


Day 1 - London to Edinburgh - 27/11/2025

Our journey begins at London Kings Cross station, as our liveried steward welcomes you aboard the sumptuous vintage carriages. We set off on our enchanting weekend tour following the historic Flying Scotsman route from London Kings Cross along the East Coast Main Line to York, where our steam locomotive joins us.  North of York we will pass through some beautiful countryside with stunning views including Durham Cathedral, the Angel of the North, the Tyne Bridges, Holy Island and the Border Bridge as the sun starts to set.

Day 1 - London to Edinburgh

Day 2 - In Edinburgh - 28/11/2025

Immerse yourself in the spirit of the season and uncover Edinburgh’s unique charm. The city’s winter events transform its centre into a Christmas wonderland, with its natural sights and architectural wonders aglow with festive magic.

The Christmas Market on Princes Street will feature around 70 stalls with some of the best local and international producers selling everything from handmade gifts, bespoke products, to tasty treats and delicious drinks. In the Princes Street Gardens, the Ross Bandstand plays host to programme of live events, including choir performances and a Light Night Concert. At Edinburgh Castle, a spectacular light show returns with immersive displays, interactive installations, music and wonder.

Day 2 - In Edinburgh

Day 3 - Forth Bridge Lunchtime Tour - 29/11/2025

Enjoy another day at leisure in Edinburgh to explore the city’s many attractions, or discover the beauty of the region by steam on our Forth Bridge Lunchtime Tour.

This rare and scenic tour departs Edinburgh Waverley mid-morning and travels over the towering structure of the Forth Bridge, offering striking views across to the road bridge and out to sea. We will then head in to Fife and make our way along the coast towards Kirkcaldy, passing the Castle and beach at Aberdour and the beaches at Burntisland and Kinghorn, before turning back inland via Dunfermline.  The train will then head along the Forth Estuary onto a rarely used goods only line which has stunning views. We then pass through Alloa and along the reopened route to Stirling, looping round the Western end of the estuary. Having crossed the Forth River at Stirling we head south through Falkirk, before arriving back into Edinburgh Waverley.

Day 3 - Forth Bridge Lunchtime Tour

Day 4 - Edinburgh to London - 30/11/2025

Our homeward journey takes us through the Pentland Hills and across the Lowlands to the Lowther Hills, following what was once known as the Caledonian Main Line. Our steam locomotive will be put through her paces as we scale several summits on our way towards the English border.

At Carlisle, we wave goodbye to our steam locomotive and continue, hauled by a vintage diesel or electric locomotive, to London Euston.

Reminisce on your stay in Scotland’s Capital as we navigate the Lune Gorge and Eden Valley, passing by the rolling peaks and pretty villages of Cumbria. We continue South  to reach London just after rush hour.

First Class offers guests an unparalleled journey into the past aboard elegantly restored carriages with comfortable and spacious seating around tables of two and four.

A sanctuary for those seeking a refined and leisurely journey without on-board dining, First Class guests are greeted with Bucks Fizz and freshly brewed coffee and tea. Guests have the option to add an Afternoon Tea to their booking (supplement applies), order additional drinks or snacks from their steward, or bring their own picnic on board.

Premium Standard

Premium Standard offers a nostalgic and authentic journey onboard a beautifully restored carriage that embodies the charm of a bygone era, with its classic decor and comfortable seating around tables for four.

Complimentary tea and coffee is served during the journey, with additional drinks or snacks available to purchase from your carriage steward. Guests also have the option to bring their own picnic on board.
