Edinburgh, described by King Charles as one of the world’s most beautiful cities and recently voted among the world’s top ten, is steeped in history and charm. With Arthur’s Seat, the Pentland Hills, and the waterfront as its backdrop, it offers a truly unique setting.

With so much to experience, you can wander the cobbled streets, explore world‑class museums and galleries, browse the shops and restaurants along the Royal Mile, visit the famous castle, and hike the rugged terrain of the volcanic Arthur’s Seat.

The Christmas market is a highlight, brimming with artisan crafts, thoughtful gifts, and seasonal delicacies. Combined with a vibrant cultural scene and lively events, the city comes alive with an enchanting atmosphere that perfectly captures the spirit of the season.

Accommodation in Edinburgh

You can choose to book hotels with Steam Dreams or independently. All passengers who book accommodation through Steam Dreams will enjoy the benefit of a dedicated representative at each hotel, as well as a luggage courier service transporting suitcases directly from the station to hotel rooms. Hotel accommodation is provided on a bed and breakfast basis.

Pullman Dining passengers will stay at one of Edinburgh’s distinguished 5‑star hotels: The Scotsman, celebrated for its character and charm; The Caledonian Hotel, a prestigious property in the historic centre; or The Balmoral, (pictured) an iconic landmark renowned for its elegance. First Class passengers will stay at the stylish 4‑star Hilton Carlton Hotel, offering modern comfort and a superb location just a two‑minute walk from Edinburgh Waverley station.

JOURNEY

ITINERARY


Day 1 - London to Edinburgh - 26/11/2026

We will set off on an enchanting weekend tour from London King’s Cross, diesel or electric hauled on a swift run to York, passing the renowned Stoke Bank, the site where Mallard set a world speed record of 126 mph in 1938. At York we will be joined by our steam locomotive. From here, our adventure continues directly to Edinburgh,weaving through breathtaking countryside and showcasing some of the UK’s most iconic landmarks, including the majestic Durham Cathedral and Antony Gormley’s celebrated sculpture, the Angel of the North.

As twilight descends, we’ll approach the Scottish border, greeted by the sweeping curve of the Royal Border Bridge at Berwick-upon-Tweed, perched high above the river. From here, the line runs for miles along the cliff tops before gently descending into the Scottish Lowlands, culminating in our arrival at the historic Edinburgh Waverley Station in the evening.

Day 2 - In Edinburgh - 27/11/2026

Immerse yourself in the spirit of the season and uncover the city’s unique charm as it transforms into a radiant Christmas wonderland, where natural beauty, historic architecture, and sparkling festive decorations shimmer with enchanting holiday magic.

Explore the renowned Christmas market, a treasure trove of artisan crafts, thoughtful gifts, and mouthwatering seasonal delicacies, set against the twinkling backdrop of a city alive with warm lights, cheerful visitors, and the joyful sound of carols. Beyond its festive charm, the city’s historic landmarks beckon with timeless appeal. Climb Arthur’s Seat for sweeping panoramic views, marvel at the commanding presence of Edinburgh Castle, or stroll through the regal halls of the Palace of Holyroodhouse.

Together, these experiences create a magical tapestry of history, culture, and holiday spirit.

Day 2 - In Edinburgh

Day 3 - Edinburgh or Optional Forth Bridge Lunchtime Tour* - 28/11/2026

Experience the breathtaking beauty of Scotland on an optional steam train journey. This lunchtime tour offers stunning vistas and a unique perspective of the region.

Departing from Edinburgh Waverley, the journey begins with a spectacular crossing of the iconic Forth Bridge, famous for its towering structure and dramatic views. The train winds through Fife along the scenic coastline toward Kirkcaldy, passing Aberdour Castle and beach, Burntisland, and Kinghorn. The route follows the rarely used goods line beside the Forth Estuary, offering miles of uninterrupted coastal views. Passing Alloa, the train loops around the western estuary before crossing the River Forth at Stirling, then heads south through Falkirk before returning to Edinburgh Waverley.

Alternatively, spend the day at leisure in Edinburgh, uncovering hidden streets, exploring cultural highlights, and embracing the seasonal spirit.

Day 3 - Edinburgh or Optional Forth Bridge Lunchtime Tour*

Day 4 - Edinburgh to London - 29/11/2026

After enjoying breakfast at your hotel, we will depart from Edinburgh Waverley, steam-hauled. As we glide out of the station, our southward journey begins, traversing the
Pentland Hills and sweeping across the Southern Uplands toward the Lowther Hills. Following the historic Caledonian Main Line, you’ll be treated to stunning views of rugged landscapes, with ancient hill forts nestled amidst dense spruce woodlands, glistening rivers, and farmsteads dotting the hillsides.

At Carlisle, we bid farewell to our steam locomotive and continue our adventure with a vintage diesel or electric locomotive. The journey takes us through the scenic Lune Gorge and Eden Valley, where the rolling peaks, meandering rivers, and charming villages of Cumbria unfold before us. Heading southward, we’ll arrive at London Kings Cross shortly after the evening rush hour, concluding a truly memorable and picturesque journey.

A sumptuous culinary experience aboard lovingly restored vintage carriages, adorned with polished brass and fine woodwork.

On Day 1, guests enjoy a full English breakfast, mid‑morning pastries, and a multi‑course seasonal evening meal, each accompanied by half a bottle of wine per person, during the journey to Edinburgh. On the return to London, a light lunch is followed later by a multi‑course dinner, again with half a bottle of wine per person.

First Class offers guests a timeless journey aboard elegantly restored carriages, with spacious seating at tables for two or four.
