Relive the elegance of yesteryear with an enchanting steam‑hauled adventure to York’s renowned Christmas Market.

Our journey begins beneath the overall roof of the Great Northern Railway’s London terminus, King’s Cross Station, opened on 14 October 1852 and designed by Lewis Cubitt. Steam‑hauled throughout, this classic journey follows the East Coast Main Line, passing Stoke Bank, where 4468 Mallard set the world speed record for a steam locomotive in 1938.

The route continues through Grantham and Doncaster before heading north to the stunning cathedral city, arriving in the historic heart of York.

Take in the sights and sounds of the season as carol singers and street performers entertain the crowds and the scent of spiced wine fills the air. After indulging in the magic and merriment of York, we steam gently homeward, reliving the nostalgic charm of this unforgettable journey.

At the heart of the celebration lies the city’s renowned Christmas Market, where more than 75 beautifully decorated wooden chalets line the pedestrianised streets. Here you’ll discover an irresistible array of handcrafted treasures, artisanal gifts and gourmet seasonal delicacies, all set against the enchanting backdrop of York’s historic charm.

Beyond the market, the city offers a wealth of festive delights. Wander through the atmospheric Shambles, explore the magnificent York Minster adorned for the season, or browse the many independent shops and boutiques that spill out onto the cobbled lanes. Street performers, carol singers and seasonal displays add to the magic, creating a truly unforgettable Christmas experience in one of England’s most captivating historic cities.

Inspired by the regions we steam through, our menus are crafted using the finest locally sourced, seasonal ingredients.

Guests are seated in plush armchair-style seats at elegantly dressed tables for two or four, adorned with crisp white linens, fine china, sparkling glassware, fresh flowers, and plump cushions – evoking the grandeur of a more refined era.

On a full-day journey, guests will be welcomed on board with a chilled Champagne Bellini, followed by a multi-course breakfast. On the return journey, they are greeted with a glass of Champagne and canapés followed by a four-course evening meal, complemented by half a bottle of wine per person.

A sanctuary for those seeking a refined, leisurely experience without formal on-board dining. First Class offers an unparalleled journey into the past aboard elegantly restored carriages, with spacious, cushioned seating arranged around tables for two or four.

Experience classic travel in our First Class carriages, where vintage charm meets modern comfort. Elegant interiors, attentive service and picture windows framing picturesque landscapes make every moment a memory to treasure.

First Class allows guests to bring their own picnic while enjoying complimentary tea and coffee, and a welcome celebratory drink served by our stewards.

Britannia

70000 Britannia is a British Railways Standard class 7 engine, alternatively known as the Britannia class, and the first of 55 to be built by British Railways in Crewe.

Completed in January 1951 she was built for express passenger services between London and Norwich.

The BR Standard classes were designed by drawing on the best qualities from several previous locomotives to create an efficient engine that was produced with lower maintenance costs and weight saving measures to enable it to work across a wider geography.

Britannia has 2 cylinders, 6 driving wheels and a firebox of 42ft2 with most of the motion situated on the outside of the frames for ease of maintenance. Whilst limited to 75mph the locomotive is capable of reaching speeds up to 100mph.

For many years Britannia’s cab roof was painted white to commemorate her pulling the funeral train of King George VI from Sandringham to London in 1952. After 15 years of service in May 1966 Britannia was retired and after spells at preserved railways returned to the national network between 1991 and 1997 until major repairs were required and the locomotive was withdrawn for overhaul. In 2010 Britannia was steamed once more and 2011 marked the locomotive’s return to the main line after a 14 year absence.
In one of her most important roles, Britannia hauled The Royal Train from Preston to Wakefield in January 2012.
